Boat Storage and Winterization Guide

Boat Storage and Winterization - Two things most every boater has to deal with in one way or another. You see Boat Storage is not just storing your boat for the winter. It is a much broader term that encompasses winter storage, dry storage and even in-water storage.

You may ask "What's the difference in winter and dry storage?". Winter Storage is generally for those who keep their boats in the water during the summer months but have no place to keep them in the off season.

Dry Storage, on the other hand, is for those who never have a place to store a boat! So they need a storage facility where they can stop and pick-up their boat, go to the lake for the day, and return it to "lock-up" before returning home.

These facilities are much like storage units for household goods only on a much larger scale. You open the doors, back your boat and trailer in, close it up and lock it securely. But take heed! These facilities are not climate controlled and it is imperative that you winterize your boat before leaving it for the winter!

Then you have in-water storage, or slip rental, where you can keep your boat in the water ready to go at a moments notice. This is for active boaters who go out often, do not want to trailer to-and-fro each time,
and do not have their own dock/slip on the lake.

Take heed again! Sure, you can keep your boat in the water during the winter but the need for winterization still applies! True, 9 times out of 10 a boat in the water will not freeze but you don't want to take a chance on being the one that did!

Freezing is rarely an issue for outboards but a frozen/cracked inboard engine block will cost you thousands (that's plural) and ruin your day in a bad way. Second only to sinking!

Now don't let the previous statement make you think outboards do not require winterization. The the most important part of winter boat storage is the winterization, and every boat engine needs it. Done properly and consistently, it is proven to extend the life of your engine and ensure it's ability to perform for years to come.
