Around here, we look forward to May Events as they signal the start of another season of cool and interesting things to do in Hot Springs. 2009 May Events promise to be as amusing and entertaining as ever so read on and start making plans for a visit.
Hot Springs Cruisers 14th Annual Car Show happens all day Saturday, May 9th at Hot Springs Municipal Airport (Airport Rd/Hwy 70W). The Hot Springs Cruisers Car Club, with the help of their many local supporters, have put on this annual show as long as the club has been in existence. Over 100 antique, collectible and special interest vehicles will be on display and, as always, music, great food and lots of vendors with goodies galore.
There will also be drawings for door prizes and admission is free for spectators. Get more information and registration information at The Cruisers Website or call 501-760-2849.
On the same weekend, the 7th Annual Art in the Park will take place at Hollywood Park (411 Hollywood Ave), May 9 & 10. Bring Mom for Mother's Day to view and purchase the works of over 35 talented artists of all mediums.
Open Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Sunday 11 a.m.-4 p.m. and admission is free. Call 501-321-6871 for more info.
The ever hilarious Steuart Pennington Running of the Tubs, we call it simply "the Bath Tub Races", is scheduled for May 17, 9 a.m. on Bath House Row in Historic Downtown Hot Springs. Rivaled only by Hot Springs' World's Shortest St. Patrick's Day Parade, this wacky annual event draws a bigger crowd every year!
The idea is teams of racers (one in the tub & four pushing) running wheeled bath tubs down the street while carrying various "bathing" items, maintaining a certain amount of water in the tub and following the craziest set of rules you ever heard all the way to the finish line! Very funny, this is good entertainment.
Magic Springs/Timerwood Amphitheater is already open for the season and their Summer Concert Series kicks off May 30th with the Charlie Daniels Band! See the Magic Springs Website for more information.
On a more somber note, today, May 1st marks the 10-year anniversary of the sinking of the WWII amphibious vehicle "Miss Majestic" on Lake Hamilton. The "Duck", as they are referred to here, used for touring the city and Lake Hamilton, went down in 60 feet of water on May 1st, 1999.
13 of the 21 people on board, including 3 children, lost their lives on what was a very sad day in Hot Springs history. We ask that you pause for a moment in remembrance of lives lost and reverance for the families affected by the tragedy.
